Rickard, groceries team leader Willys

What are the best things about your job?
The fact that it is so incredibly varied, that you get to be involved in so many different things. Having personnel responsibility is wonderful, because you get to coach employees who may have lost momentum. Giving them new tasks and watching them grow in their role feels good.

What is your view of service/customer focus?
The customers are the reason we’re here, which makes them incredibly important. I always try to be as friendly and helpful as possible. If the customer wants a particular item that we don’t have, I try to suggest an alternative. If it’s a product that I think more customers would be interested in, I try to get it added to the assortment.

How long have you worked here at Willys?
For six years. I’m only 23 and I started working at Willys when I was at upper secondary school. I worked at weekends and was responsible for the bottle and can recycling area. After my national service, I started working full-time and was put in charge of drinks. Three years ago, I became head of groceries and also deputy store manager.

What does your job involve?
I do all sorts of different things. I have personnel responsibilities and I employ staff. I am part of the store’s management team and have responsibility for putting in orders. These days, we have an auto order system, so I just need to set up advance orders. I actually spend most of my time out in the store and restocking.

What is it like being on the store’s management team?
That’s where all the decisions are taken. We kick all the ideas around and everyone has their say. I have a responsibility to get my points across and to listen to the others. And that’s true for the others on the management team too. It’s brilliant being involved and having some influence.
